Clunes Ceramic award - ZERO ONE

ZERO ONE

These vessels recall the Victorian taxonomists’ careful documentation of the mysteries of nature; the urge to separate and preserve in isolation parts of a living and contiguous world beyond immediate comprehension.  The work explores the hybrid status of these objects: between nature and representation, art and science.

The vessels mysterious forms elude classification: are they organic or mineral? Living or dead? Marine or terrestrial? Alien or earthly? Art or science?

These forms exist in an elegant state of suspended animation, separated from one another by the artifices of science, they call upon us to unravel their mysteries; interrogate their connections. We are required, in looking at these works, to examine our position as passive observers and to engage in a narrative process of rebuilding and reconnection.

Deakin Contemporary Small Sculpture Award

Deakin University contemporary small sculpture award 2011 started Yesterday.

Congratulations to

The winner : Stephen Bird, for his work Boxers.

Stephen says, 'My ceramic works locate themselves in an invented world where dissonant cultural idioms come together to form a language I have coined Industrial Sobotage. I use humour, propaganda, trompe l'oeil and meaningless violence to re-tell archetypal myths and make observations about complex collective issues, including politics, cultural imperialism and the global power struggle.'
This $10,000 award is sponsored by the School of Management and Marketing, Faculty of Business and Law, Deakin University, and organised by the Deakin University Art Collection and Galleries unit.
37 finalists were recently selected for the 2011 Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award from 263 entries by the judging panel consisting of:

Artist Statement
I am intrigued by the function of memory; how some memories are vivid while others are fleeting, how memory affects individual, familiar, and cultural identity. Personal memories provide the framework from which I can ask broader questions. I am inspired by sensory memory and intrigued with the relationship between visual memory and tactile perception."
